Lesson 4 Part 2: The Helpers of the Secret Annexe

Five people helped the people living in the Secret Annexe. They are:


1. Mr. Voskuijl - In Diary Entry 2, Anne mentions that he built the bookshelf that hides the entrance to the Annexe.


2. Mr. Victor Kugler - Same as above.


3. Ms. Bep Voskuijl - She joins the inhabitants of the Annexe for dinner in Diary Entry 3.


4. Ms. Miep Gies - Anne mentions her in Diary Entry 4. Her husband, Jan Gies, argues with the Annexe inhabitants in Diary Entry 4 as well.


5. Mr. Joseph Kleiman - Mentioned in Diary Entry 4. Someone suggests that Kleiman and his family hide in the Annexe as well if Holland is flooded.

Lesson 3 Part 2: Dinner in the Secret Annexe

Read through the diary entry on pages 16 to 18 of your Literature textbook.

Working in pairs, write a SCRIPT of what the dinner conversation might be like in the Secret Annexe. Try to involve all of the characters mentioned in the diary entry.

Your script could begin like this:

Mrs. Van Daan: Anne, could you pass me the potatoes please?

Anne (under her breath): Some people are always so hungry!

You can work on the script in Microsoft Word, but you should post the script as a BLOG POST by the end of the lesson.

Your script should be at least 20 lines long and fit the character descriptions given in the passage.

Lesson 2 Part 2: The War in Singapore

In February 1942, the Japanese, who were allies of the Germans, invaded Singapore.

The Japanese occupation that followed was a brutal one, and many living in Singapore were cruelly tortured and killed.

Imagine you are a 12-year-old child living in Singapore during this time. You decide to hide from the Japanese army.

In a NEW POST, answer the following questions:

1a. Where would you try to hide from the Japanese? In which part of Singapore - what kind of building, or in an outdoor location? Why would you choose this place?

Lesson 2 Part 1: The Secret Annexe

Last week, we met Anne Frank for the first time.

Read PAGE 3 of your textbook to remind yourself of key historical facts.

In 1933, Anne Frank and her family moved from Germany to Holland, as Hitler's Nazi Party introduced anti-Jewish laws.

In 1940, however, Germany occupies Holland and introduces the same laws there.

In 1942, Anne's sister, Margot, is summoned to report to a labour camp. As such, the family decides to go into hiding in the Secret Annexe.

Diaries vs. Blogs

Welcome to our Literature Blog!

We will be using this blog for Literature lessons this term as we are reading about Anne Frank's Diary. 

I'm guessing many of you don't keep pen and paper diaries anymore, but you BLOG instead!
