Dear Anne ,

After reading your diary , it has made me realize about the war , and how hard times were back then . Your family lived in constant fear everyday due to the Nazis , who were out to exterminate all the Jews . And then , your family lived in the Secret Annexe for a long period of time , with another family and some other people helping them . You say you dislike some of the people in the Secret Annexe , for example , Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan . You find Mr. Van Daan clever but always speaking his mind and thinking that he is always right , and Mrs. Van Daan who you find really irritating as she always causes trouble between you and your mother . As for their son , Peter Van Daan , you used to hate him , but slowly grew to like him more and more . Personally , I find you really amazing , being able to live through those hard times where Jews were all exterminated while your family was in the Secret Annexe , hiding from the outside world , and living in fear from them and still needing to share a cramp space with another family , which you hardly knew and had to adapt with living with them and actually bonding with them . And it was hard for the people who were helping you as people might suspect why they were always buying large quantities of food at one go . But its also boring living in the Secret Annexe as there is nothing much to do , except random things like bathing and cooking , etc . And upon reading the diary entry that you hardly cared if you lived or died , it was like you were giving up on life , which you shouldn’t have because not long after you died , the Jews were released and free to go . So even if your sister had died , you should have kept the strong will on living on . But I admire your will , of taking death as something that will happen eventually and taking it in stride , which isn’t an easy fact for some people to accept .

Yours sincerely ,
Dorcas .

  1. Please paragraph your letter! :P Good work giving details from the diary entries, especially about the difficulties they faced buying food. I like your personal response at the end - it's very positive. - Miss Ruby

  2. Yeah, we all understand that once someone close to you and they can't take the blow. But that person has to live on. Though the entry is a little messy. But, well done.
